first off, if it's on mtv it's NOT hip hop (50 cent isn't fucking hip hop), secondly if it's about lots of bling with my bitches riding on my twenty's capin some mofo it's NOT hip hop, thirdly if the song is only two lines repeating over and over it's NOT hip hop, fourth if the verse is all jumbled together and not enunciated it's NOT hip hop, the above mentioned criteria constitute rap. Hip hop typically has a social message that not just about how fucking awesome I am and how hot my bitches are, enunciated lyrics, a more complex beat, and requires serious talent. If you want to listen to hip hop, you have to seek it out. It's not going to be on MTV or clear channel And finally if you listen to both and can't discern a single thing and think I'm full of shit go listen to Umi Says by Mos Def (you can even find the lyrics on line), at least you'll understand the differing messages between hip hop and rap

I fucking hate it when people call rap and hip hop the same thing, they're not, go fucking educate yourself

Hip hop is a culture, or a lifestyle if you wish. the term '4 elements' was coined when there was still only 4 elements; bboyin (not break dancing) which could mean break boy or beat boy or bronx boy depending on where you live. emceeing, which used to be shoutouts and such later evolved into 'rapping' and no thats not what 50 cent does because 50 cent is a sellout loser that sings bout his imagineary 'hoes'. Djing or turntablism, this started by them just replaying the break bits in funk songs so that bboys could get down, and breakbeats was the first hiphop music ('evolved' from funk music.) Graffiti, i dont know much about this but its visual art. The 4 elements was a good concept for a while, but hip hopp grew and became more than 4 elements, making this term invalid.

Hip hop is a lifestyle, its a culture.

a music style created in the late seventies.what was once a cool underground movement has now mutated into corporate sexist garbage. the hip hop "artists" are more concerned about making money through image, trendy clothing styles and heavy commercialization. Not all but MOST do not care so much about making good music only to be rich and and fanous. They achieve multi platinum albums through their image and being heaviy promoted and not from musical content. hip hop is nearly dead. It has lost almost all of its aesthetics because people are doing it to be trendy. one day there will be an artist (from rock rap or even reggaeton) that will deystroy this garbage on Mtv.

My thoughts on hip hop: all killer but no filler (great sales but no musical content)

culture in which there are 4 elements that compose it. Breakdancing, graffiti, Mcing, and DJing. Culture which has their own dance (breaking), art (graffiti), music, language, and its race is international. Every race can participate in this culture. Hip hop originally didn't start talking about hoes or drugs or gangbanging, it started as a way to show off how good you are at the element you are good for and talk about other subjeccts like love, party, protest against goverment, music to enjoy other elements with, and stuff like that. The real hip hop stays underground and never sells out to be mainstream. Once its mainstream, it should be called just rapping, not hip hop\! Hip hop was born underground and should stay underground. Hip hop should also not be asociated with gangs and drugs.

It's a culture, it's a state of mind, it's a language, it's fashion, it's a style, it's something you feel every moment of your day. Hip hop is not commercial shit, hip hop is deep, it has a meaning for each person. You don't just listen to hip hop music, you feel it, you respect it, understand it, share it.

hip hop and rap are not the same thing

Hip Hop is a culture centered around bettering yourself and being positive. There are 4 original elements. Dance: Breaking is the ONLY dance realated to hip hop despite what the media tells you. The only 2 adopted elements to the dance is popping and locking. If your not breaking, popping, or locking then your not dancing hip hop. Music: DJ: The hip hop art form of playing the music using records and involving scratching and extending beats. The most important element of hip hop, because with the beat there can be no emceeing or dancing. Emcee: The art of rhyming and rapping. Make sure you understand the difference between "HIP HOP" and "GANGSTER RAP". While gangster rap is still in the catagory of hip hop because of the emcee and dj, it is not part of the hip hop culture because hip hop isn't about being a gangster. Graffiti: The visual art form of hip hop often using letters and characters. From tagging to murals using anything from markers to spray cans. The meaning of hip hop has been lost over time. Its not about dressing a certain way, where your from, what nationality you are, or how much money you have. Its about being yourself, not being a mindless follower, and expressing your own creativity. Hip hop came from the ghetto, and the purpose of it was for people to better themselves. Rather than going out and shooting each other they could dance, or rap, or express themselves through art. Hip hop has been underestimated by a lot of people who don't understand it, and it has literaly saved the lives of a lot of people. Hip hop is just a word, it has been around since the beginning of time even if nobody knew what it was. A person who has never heard of the word hip hop in their life who lives positively and works hard at everything they do is living hip hop more than a person who TRYS to be hip hop, dances, paints, dj's, and emcee's, but doesn't know what it means.

Did you hear KRS One's new hip hop cd? Hip hop changed my life Hip hop saved my life I went to a hip hop event where they had breakers, poppers, lockers, dj's, emcee's, and graff writers.

hip hop's not dead because millions & millions of people all around tha world still live it\! hip hops not just all about tha bling bling, tha imaginary hoes, and tha computerized shiny cars in musicvideos. its not JUST a type or genre of music, it's a culture/life that people live every day. hip hop isn't just underground either.. sometimes underground artists take away the real from hip hop. sure, hip hop includes the four elements (grafitti art, djing, mcing, and breakin) but its way more then that.. hip hop is only what you yourself can define.. hip hop is real & undying so dont tell ME that hip hop is dead cause i can tell myself and everyone around there that "HIP HOP LIVES FOR ME.. A highly controversial form of music. This is divided into two main categories: "old-school hip-hop," and "new-school hip-hop." “Old-school hip-hop” refers to the time when this particular genre of music came into widespread popularity. This was the time in which the artist had to strive to make excellent songs in order to expand the number of people that chose to listen to the music. This is often referred to as “the good old days of hip-hop.” “New-school hip-hop” is entirely different from “Old-school hip-hop.” The main difference is the lack of talent and time required to make a ‘hit.’ The art of making a hip-hop song in this new age is simple: 1) Create a catchy melody of short duration (minimum of 1 second, maximum of 8). Repeat this melody throughout the entire song, without a break. It is permitted to change the octave of the melody, and any instrument (including a voice) is acceptable. The only rules this melody must adhere to is that it is a) short, and b) repetitive. 2) Write the lyrics. The lyrics must pertain to one or more of the following subjects: a) partying b) how much money the artist has c) how famous the artist is d) how attractive the subject female (or more rarely, male) is, and the features which cause that attraction e) what position and method of sex the artist did with, or wants to do to, the subject female (or male) 3) The song MUST be repetitive to the point of annoyance and it must take no longer than 30 minutes to completely write the music and lyrics. Those not making the clear distinction between when hip-hop was widely-considered good and its current state (extremely poor), are just as closed-minded and pathetic as those who listen to hip-hop in its current state and actually draw enjoyment from it.

Hip Hop is an art form that includes deejaying cuttin' & scartchin' emceeing/rappin', break dancing and graffiti art. These art forms as we know them today originated in the South Bronx section of New York City around the mid 1970s. Hip Hop has thrived within the subculture of Black and Puerto Rican communities in New York and is now just recently beginning to enjoy widespread exposure. From a sociological perspective, Hip Hop has been one of the main contributing factors that helped curtail gang violence due to the fact that many adults found it preferable to channel their anger and aggressions into these art forms which eventually became the ultimate expression of one's self. The Godfather of Hip Hop is Afrika Bambaattaa. The world's oldest, largest and most respected grass roots of hip hop. He created an organization called the Universal Zulu Nation. Hip Hop culture is a positive tool for social change. The inception of Hip Hop culture in the Bronx was during the early 1970's; it has been a vehicle for breaking down racial barriers on a world wide level. Hip Hop is a means for overcoming challenges, and a means for teaching awareness and knowledge, inspiration and wisdom. During the 70's, Hip Hop was a celebration of life, gradually developing to form a cultural movement as a result of its dynamic energy and momentum. Hip Hop culture has greatly influenced the entertainment world with its creative contributions in music, dance, art, poetry, and fashion. Hip Hop is the vehicle to deliver innumerable lessons and continues to provide for unity, love, respect, and responsibility. Due to the medias lack of knowledge about the whole of the Hip Hop culture, many of our world's youth are mistaken in thinking that activities such as: smoking blunts, drinking 40's, wearing a designer label plastered across their chest, carrying a gun, or going to strip clubs, are "Hip Hop". Hip Hop is being portrayed negatively by many artists who work in the element of Rap and this negativity is usually instigated and promoted by the record industry and various other corporations who exploit the culture at the expense of the youth's state of mind and morality.

D.J. Afrika Bambaattaa and the Universal Zulu Nation, Cool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, the Cold Crush Brothers, Cool Clyde and Lightnen Lance, Nolie Dee, Maria Davis and Mytika Davis are true inspirations to Hip Hop.

Hip Hop is largely a sub-culture within a larger culture centred originally around dance (bboying), turn-tables (Dj-ing), Emceeing (shoutouts and dedications) and graffiti. However, hip-hop has managed to evolve into more than just the four initially defining elements. It assumed the status of being a community's conscience and advocate for enlightenment. As such, hip-hop has acquired great variety from place to place depending on what message is dimmed most befitting in those particular sectors of society. But generally, hip-hop, upon assuming such a demanding role, has had to become more direct and clear in its message, resulting in a shift from seemingly nonsensical rapping into very skillful rhyme deliveries involving a crafty use of words, metaphors and rhyme patterns. 1993 saw the beginning of this dramatic shift from just rapping to thoughtful emceeing. At ths point, it should be evident that what is depicted on MTV and other media is not Hip-Hop but some tangency eminating from a noble way of life and culture. Call that stuff on mass media rap music but not Hip-Hop. Today, real hip-hop music can be hard to find but nonetheless, it is available for those who really want it. It is enjoyed all across the world, and, underground hip-hop, as it is refered in SADC Africa is becoming more and more accessible.

An urban subculture that began in New York in the 1970s and slowly rose to prominence throughout the 80s and 90s. With the recent rise of young mainstream rappers, it can stand as fact and not belief that although the dance aspect of this subculture is alive and constantly expanding, the hip hop music -- a genre of music popularized by rappers like Run-DMC and KRS One -- is currently in a comatose state, if not dead.

A widely misunderstood CULTURE that is centered around 4 pillars: DJing, rapping, b-boying and graffiti writing. The culture is based upon the idea of peace and love in poor ghetto communities and that street violence should be replaced by rap battles, and that battles should be fought not with guns but with the mind. Although hip-hop music is usually mistaken for rap music, the two are similar but not the same. They are performed in the same way, i.e. by speaking rhythmically over a beat with occasional support from a DJ, hip-hop music is more community-oriented. MCs usually discuss living in the ghetto and the rough conditions that their people face (The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five is a great example of this), one or more of the four pillars of Hip Hop (Out for Fame by KRS-One), or Hip Hop culture, its history, and their own personal experiences with the music (Hip Hop Lives by KRS-One, or I Used to Love H.E.R. by Common Sense). Rap music can be centered around any number of things, usually, though not always, about material things (Hypnotize by The Notorious B.I.G.) and/or sex (Lollipop by Lil' Wayne). Rap music also glorifies the ideas of being a gangster, while Hip Hop discusses the matter in a neutral or negative matter (Changes by 2pac).

Hip means to know, its a form of intelligence, To be hip is to be update and relevant, Hop is a form of movement, You can't observe a hop, you gotta hop up and do it, Hip and Hop is more than music, Hip is the knowledge, hop is the movement, Hip and Hop is intelligent movement, Or relevant movement, we sellin' the music. - KRS-One & Marley Marl, "Hip Hop Lives" JUST TO CLARIFY: Although many think rap music and culture is bad, rap is not. It is the sister to hip hop, separated only by subject matter and small differences in culture. Though much of what one hears on the radio is indeed rap, rap is just as misunderstood as Hip Hop is. A true Hip Hop head knows to respect all people and their ideas, for all people have rights to their own beliefs.

18. (Hip Hop) (10↑, 6↓)
Hip Hop became huge in the early 80's and is the culture that includes Rap music in all it's forms and doesn't necessarily have to have a rapping in it.The earliest form consisted of a DJ and MC. Inner city, ghetto and musically inspired visual art such as graffiti, tagging, and commercial art using colorful characters, wild original fonts depicting ones name, a crews name or a gangs title.Graffiti usually acts as a claim to a territory or promotes the artist, writer, bomber or tagger. Breakdancing is an integral part of Hiphop that is a massively acrobatic and original freestyle form of dancing. Alot of the art of breakdancing is based around battling. This when individuals or groups compete against each other. The clothing worn in hip hop culture varies widely but started with sweat suits from brands like Adidas, Puma and Nike, kango hats and fat shoe laces. At one point the hot fad was plain blue jeans or Dickies work clothing and white t-shirts. The style of today is usually brightly colored hooded sweatshirts and sports teams logoed active wear. The style of hiphop has evolved into many different styles and sub genres. Hip Hop has been the biggest new music, visual art, dancing style since Rock and Roll. Now days a hiphop song may contain Rock and roll and a rock song may contain hiphop elements.

Hip Hop is to music and culture of the 80's through today as what Rock and Roll was to music and culture in the 50's to the early 80's. They both were claimed to be just passing fads. They both were fueled with rebellion and aggression and were both opposed by religious and close minded people. Both Rock and Roll and HipHop largely inspired types of dance, clothing, visual art and slang language. They both were unaccepted by mainstream to only become mainstream later.

The biggest laughing stalk of music. The least intelligent form of music and the form of music which requires the least talent. Black people suck. Fuck [nigger] music. On the contrary, [Heavy metal] musicians are the most talented, complex and skilled musicians in the whole world. In order to play Heavy metal you have to be extremely skilled and dedicated to your instruments. Most metal musicians play extremely complex material and have been usually playing their instruments for over a decade. Are classically trained and know musical theory. Hip Hop rappers are total wimps compared to metal musicians and cannot even play an instrument. They may think that tapping on a [Korg] keyboard is playing an instrument, but it's not. Hip Hop has no technicality and any person can play what is done on a keyboard in only five minutes. Most rappers have no readily developed talents. Metal musicians are real musicians unlike shoddy Hip Hop rappers who just rhyme English words and don't know how to play an instrument. Heavy metal musicians are gods and make Hip Hop artists look like a bunch of [noobs]. Also, metal is the most misunderstood form of music in the world. Most people think that Heavy metal is a bunch of devil worship and loud guitars and screaming, and that bands like Slipknot are metal. Slipknot are not metal; they are [Hard rock] as they do not have any musical merit. It is an annoying cringe-worthy form of music that only uncultured American philistines listen to.

"Hip Hop sucks major dick." "Heavy metal musicians are the best and hardworking musicians in the world. White people rule and will always be the best at everything, including music. Hail Europe." "Rappers think that rhyming words is a talent. Rhyming words isn't even that hard. Writing poetry and real lyrics is far more difficult and cumbersome; and no Poetry does not always rhyme. No musical merit or skill whatsoever, and yet they think that rhyming is the only thing in Hip Hop that qualifies as talent." "Hip Hop listeners have no culture. They say that Hip Hop is a culture and a way of life, but that's bullshit. Hip Hop is pseudo-culture."

There are 4 original elements of hip hop. bboying, mcing (rapping), djing, and graffiti art. Despite what the media and a lot of people think, bboying is the only form of dance in hip hop, then popping and locking were adopted elements to it. So if theres no popping, locking, or breaking, then its not hip hop. Britney Spears is not hip hop, thats what i would call street jazz. As far as music goes if there is rapping or djing then it is considered hip hop. And graffiti art is the use of spray cans and markers to design words and characters of your own and are usually done illigally on walls and buildings.

Hip Hop is real music that came directly from jazz and soul and incorporates elements of rap. It gets a bad rap (pun not indended) today because most mainstream music is considered hip hop, although it is in actuality pop, techno garbage. Hip Hop refers to the African American music genre and the culture which surrounded it. Its time of birth was gradual, making it difficult to name a specific year. Most sources agree on early to mid 1970's. The music its self evolved from earlier and other 1970's black American muisic, such as Disco, Funk and Jazz. This music paired with certain Jamaican cultures led to the use of MC's talking over the music at live shows, which would later progress into what is now known as rapping. Other important elements to the culture include grafiti, dance (b-boys) and especially Dj'ing. Early Hip Hop music was made by a DJ using his turntables, mixer and records. The arts of cutting and mixing were used to sample parts of records to create a whole new track. In todays sense, Hip Hop has developed huge mainstreem success, and Gangsta Rap has become less about the music and more about comercialism, making money and 'pimpin bitches.' There is, however a large underground Hip Hop following, which vows to stay true to Hip Hop. Madlib being a prime example of a true Hip Hop artist.

37. (hip hop) (49↑, 123↓)
The second poxiest kind of "music" on the planet, rap being the number one all-time shitest. I won't even go into why; just listen to some and feel your IQ decrease and your brains slop out from your ears. You may want to wear a cap sideways after the experience and that also makes you like a nob. Pure talentless drivel. If someone said I should listen to some I'd rather, and I quote, "stick my wedding tackle in a lions mouth while whipping it's love spuds with a wet towel".

Guy 1: What's that sound? Guy 2: Hip hop Guy 1: Shit innit? Guy 2: Yes

38. (hip hop) (41↑, 125↓)
A "culture" which consists in losers who like to speak like retards about how much they rule because they're "chillin ghetto pimps".

Hip Hop Dude: "Yo, bitch \! I'm a fuckin' pimp. No style, no life* \!" *Considering the only valid "style" is theirs because they are so damn cool.

39. (hip hop) (95↑, 196↓)
A word used to describe the audio version of dog shit. Hip hop is to civilized ears what fresh dogshit is to bare feet. Insofar as contribution to our culture goes, that any homie with an IQ of slightly more than 45 (i.e. your advanced homie) can belt this shit out on the first try without any practice, training, or study whatsoever is a big hint. Another is the skill with which they affix their hats to their little BB-like heads.

When that ex-cop Caprice pulled up beside me in traffic with his hip hop dogshit turned up so high his trunk lid was buzzing, I decided not to go to a black lawyer or a black doctor just to be on the safe side, and I think I'll make it tougher for 'em to get into my university, not to mention neighborhood.

40. (hip hop) (37↑, 148↓)
Hip hop is the anti-movement. Take Lional Richie for example, his music was intended to close the gap between identifiable black and white music. There was a movement for equality for all men, (known as the civil rights movement) and with todays hip hop music, that gap is quickly being torn open. For estetic purposes Hip Hop music is realistic. Although my respect for it ends there.

Hip hop is the anti-movement.

41. (Hip Hop) (47↑, 166↓)
The culture someone chooses to live, and it's main music stlye is Rap and DJing. The art or Hip Hop is grafitti. The way you dress is with a Tall Tee(a shirt that goes down to you're knees),long rimmed hat, basketball sneakers, jeans(with part of underwear showing) and shorts that come down a few centermeters over you're ankels, bandanas or du-rags and for the jewelery,"bling bling". The type of dancing is also called Hip Hop,which includes Clown-Dancing,Krumping and regular Hip Hop.

Rap is the music,Hip Hop is how you live -Kurtis Blow

42. (hip hop) (86↑, 214↓)
A genre of "music" which exists due to its popularity with unintelligent people due to its status and not due to actual musical merit, of which it is usually totally devoid.

"Oi this new 50 cent tune is bare weighty innit" "Um, no - 50 cent is big phony with zero musical talent and most, if not all, hip hop is unlistenable rubbish" "Oi shut your chat or I will tax your phone mate. Whoops I got to go back to my council flat to eat my dinner of chips and ketchup"

43. (hip hop) (144↑, 367↓)
a shit type of music and lifestyle choice that has no place in the New World, something only chavs and wannabe wiggers listen to

Man: That hip-hop is shit, play something with a bit of fucking talent. Hip hop fanatic: *lost for words that someone has stood up to him/her*
